Plans are in the works for the 2012 Malibu Surfrider Nose Riding Championship.

Tom Morey, Mickey Munoz and Tak Kawahara are on the Advisory Board. The 2012 contest format is identical to Tom's 1965 contest, which launched a few firsts for the surfing industry: It is considered the first professional contest, first to inspire numerous inventions and first to have objective judging (timed nose rides).

Mickey Munoz won that contest and we hope to snag him for one of our first interviews.

The format is simple; no length limitation and the nose area is 25% of the length of the surfboard. We do have a sub-rule: 20 inches is the minimum length of the nose area and all shapes must have components that are fully integrated.

Both the Doheny Surf Club and the Malibu Surfing Association are having their 50th Reunion this year. "I can tell you that many of the original members of MSA are traveling great distances to join other members and embrace some great memories. We're going to have an incredible gathering on September 8th for a full day of surf and sand action. I'm really excited." Bob Purvey.

The Ugly Surfboard Club is forming for collectors and fans of The Ugly and Super Ugly surfboards, originated and designed by Bob Purvey in 1966 and 1967 respectively. First built by Con Surfboards, a new lineup is now manufactured by the state-of-the-art craftsmanship at 12th Floor Foam & Glass www.12thfloorsurfboards.com

The purpose for this club is many fold and not just for those of you owning an Ugly or Super Ugly Surfboard.  It’s for anyone interested in collecting The Ugly and Super Ugly Surfboards, memorabilia, nose riding, surfboard concepts and designs, sharing photos, videos, surf stories and almost everything under the sun having to do with surfing, the art of nose riding and the history of extreme board sports. 

For beginners to advanced surfers, The Ugly Surfboard Club is a place to get Bob Purvey's Blog, read about his discussions with legendary surfers, features on surf industry news, question & answer sessions, tips on how you can improve your surfing and nose riding, as well as posts of comments, suggestions, photos and videos we receive from members keenly interested in the art of nose riding. 

As Bob Purvey wrote in his first Blog: "Nose riding is a thrill and getting out there on the tip is like gliding on the surface of the wave with just your feet; you're defying gravity. Next to tube riding, nose riding is the most difficult maneuver in longboard surfing. Every second on the nose feels like time is suspended and leaves an indelible impression. It takes discipline to develop the proper skills, many times at the expense of broken boards and broken egos. We want to help make the learning curve a little less strenuous and much more enjoyable."
