THE UGLY CHALLENGE
(Video is a demonstration, not the actual event.)

This professional (invitational) surfing competition objectively judges champions who surf the front end of the surfboard (“Tip” or "Nose" area) for the longest time, at Malibu’s world famous Surfrider Point. Riding the front end of the surfboard is a balancing act requiring keen technical skills. Hanging ten is just one of the many maneuvers in the repertoire of riding the tip for time. Tip-time takes surfing to the extreme and gets entire audiences caught up in the thrill and suspense of "who gets the longest tip rides?" Malibu Surfrider's "Minute-long Wave" provides one of the best opportunities in the world to maximize on the suspense of the longest tip-time, the "Sport of kings" and associated media exposure in the lucrative, celebrity driven, legendary surfing community of Malibu.

There are many issues we need to be concerned about when it comes to water pollution and Malibu highlights a sophisticated and wealthy community, alledgedly sensitive to environmental issues, and yet it ignores the hazardous pollution of the creek and lagoon waters, as well as the obvious degradation of the creek and lagoon ecosystem in the heart of Malibu, despite millions of dollars spent on numerous studies over the past two decades.

THE UGLY CHALLENGE

Introduction

The tip ride, more than any other surfing maneuver, serves as the classic definition of hot-dogging.  Tip riding is generally practiced in point surf where the challenge becomes tip riding for time.

To tip ride for a long time, more than a second or two, is to demonstrate mastery of the wave and surfboard. This one-day event features 48 to 64 invited surfing champions from around the world to compete by riding the front end ("Tip" or "Nose") of their surfboard, for as long as they can at Malibu’s world famous point waves, known for one of the longest wave rides in California - "the minute-long ride."

The Ugly Challenge is based on Tom Morey’s (inventor of the Morey-Boogie) 1965 Tip Time format, which is an objective judging system using state-of-the-art measuring devices, including stopwatches, video recordings from multiple angles and binoculars to judge the amount of accumulated time on a wave, while on the tip.

The tip area is 25 percent (25%) of the surfboard’s length or no less than 20 inches. Any length surfboard may be used. Invention is encouraged. Mandatory colors are yellow tip area, red tail area for judging purposes.

This one-day event is planned for Fall, 2011 (stay tuned for updates) and is contingent on sponsorship support, favorable surf and weather conditions: two foot minimum and no maximum wave height, weather conditions favorable for visual judging and also cancelled if the Malibu lagoon could probably open to the surf zone.

The purpose of this event is to promote a greater understanding of discipline in the sport of surfing and safety in the waves and waters of Malibu to help the community in its efforts to protect and conserve the beaches and surf. The event will provide a well-publicized, entertaining activity that will give the sponsor direct access to and association with the trend-setting Malibu community and its world famous Surfrider Beach environment. The event, TV and web show are expected to generate over 100 million impressions world wide.

The Ugly Challenge also supports EcoMalibu in its efforts to educate the public about its mission, which is to gain California Marine Sanctuary designation for the marine ecosystem that surrounds Malibu Surfrider Beach, including the lagoon, creek, wetland and fishing pier.

Tom Morey (inventor of the first contest) and Mickey Munoz (Winner of the first Morey contest in 1965) are initiating the Advisory Board and serve as goodwill ambassadors to promote the sport of surfing, the tip-time objective judging system and surfboard innovations.
